Independent Schools: The High School of Glasgow

The High School of Glasgow

Few schools in Scotland can match the High School of Glasgow:  a school proud of its distinctive heritage and passionate about its commitment to learning and nurturing the potential of every pupil.

“Our ethos is clear”, says High School Rector, John O’Neill. “The pupil who feels happy, safe, supported and encouraged is one who is open to learning and who will strive to do his or her best. If we get that right, all else will fall into place.  At the High School we are committed to developing the whole person, pupils realising their own potential, confident in themselves, and concerned for others.

Many High School pupils are selected each year for national choirs, orchestras and sports teams.

Academic results, too, are impressive year on year. In 2016, all 97 fifth year pupils sat a total of 495 Highers, passing 475, with 73% at grade “A”, the best performance of any school in Scotland. 50 fifth year pupils achieved at least five highers at “A” grade.

The High School’s Kindergarten and Junior School at Bearsden provides a sensitive and nurturing learning setting for children aged 3½ to 10 years of age, with over 40 extra-curricular activities for pupils, from judo, skiing, and chess to joining one of the school’s choirs or musical ensembles.

A welcome additional service for parents is the “Out of School Care and Holiday Clubs”. The Junior School is open from 8 am till 6pm, with Out of School Care available following classes on each school day and Holiday Clubs during the school holidays.

Children move up to the Senior School at primary seven – this “transitus year” provides a supportive but invaluable early introduction to secondary school life.

John O’Neill adds: “The parents who send their children to the Junior or Senior School share our belief that with the right attention, care and support their children can grow into exceptional adults”.

Come and see the High School of Glasgow for yourself.
